Homeschool Students

Coming to Japan can feel like a major culture shock—new language, new customs, and a completely different education system. At TCU, however, many homeschool students find the transition surprisingly smooth.

Our learning environment is intentionally small and personal, much like homeschooling itself. With class sizes of just 5–10 students, you are never just a number. Professors know you by name, notice your strengths, and support you when challenges arise. Questions are welcomed, discussion is encouraged, and students are truly seen and heard.

TCU offers a close-knit academic community where relationships matter. For students who are used to individualized attention, flexible thinking, and meaningful interaction, TCU feels less like a large institution and more like a learning family—just in the heart of Japan.

Studying at TCU allows homeschool students to step into a new culture while staying grounded in a familiar, supportive style of education.

Applying to TCU

The application process for a homeschool student is almost same as it is for any other student. Applications will be reviewed with or without the submission of ACT or SAT test scores.

Steps for applying
  1. Send a copy of transcript to admission@tci.ac.jp
  2. Complete an online application

In the online application, you can request that your school upload transcripts and test scores such as the SAT or ACT.

If the home school is unaccredited, we may request a pre-application online interview to determine eligibility to apply.

Homeschool Students’ Frequently Asked Questions

Are there homeschool students at TCU?

Yes! About 20% of the English-track students are homeschooled.

Do homeschool students have a separate application?

No. Homeschool applicants fill out and submit the same application as all other applicants.

Depending on the accreditation of the homeschool, we may have an additional pre-application interview.

Are SAT or ACT scores required?

Along with an increasing number of universities, TCU no longer requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT test results. We understand that some applicants may still wish to submit one of these test results if they have already taken or have plans to take one of these exams. They may do so if they wish, but this is not a requirement for applying to TCU. However, TCU still recommends that applicants in homeschool and unaccredited secondary schools who conducted their secondary education in English submit an SAT or ACT score report.
